The Custom-Tile Process

A busy day in the tile studio, with tiles at various stages of completion. Each tile goes through three firings to build color and detail.

Custom, Hand-Painted Detail

Julie can paint any size commercial porcelain or earthenware field tile that can be fired in a kiln. The painted images are durable enough to bring luxurious art to the top of this kitchen island. In this mural of the fruits and insects from the client’s orchard, the background tile, a rustic golden Italian porcelain, brings warmth and depth to the painting. This client also ordered a tile parade of her favorite chickens along the sink backsplash.

Your Choice of Image

Custom means custom–Julie loves collaborating with clients to create tile murals that achieve the effects they want. This artful, one-of-a-kind mural brings a whimsical team of chefs and pigs right into the client’s kitchen–it replicates her kitchen layout, curtain material, copper pan collection and even her Wheaten Terrier. Communicating with you by phone and email, Julie explains and shows you the process, making you a co-creator in the work you will enjoy for years.

As you consider custom hand-painted tiles, ask yourself the following questions:

• Where will the tile be installed?
• How large is the space, and how much hand-painted tile do I need?
• What images do I want on the tile?
• Do I want a continuous picture, or individual tiles arranged randomly or in a pattern on the wall?
• What kind of tile do I want to use? Color? Gloss or matte? What size tile?
• Are there colors I want or need to consider for the room’s decor?

The next step is to call Julie and discuss the project.

Julie will have lots of questions for you, including the ones above, as she collaborates with you to achieve the look you want. We will likely exchange emails with information on color and image, and she will send you photos of the work in progress.

Terms and conditions

After discussing the project with you, Julie will send you a price estimate.

To begin the project, you pay a 50% deposit and ship blank tiles to Julie.

Once she has painted the tile, you pay the remainder of the balance and Julie ships the tile.

Julie recommends that you carefully pack and insure the tiles you ship. She assumes no responsibility for tiles that arrive broken. She will carefully pack and insure the tiles she ships and requests that you notify her immediately of breakage during shipping.

Because of the custom nature of the work, no returns are allowed.
